Since
leaving the clinical practice of internal medicine in 1998, I
have divided my time between researching and writing about medical
topics and working on environmental issues. I am the president
of Long Beach Organic a
local community gardening and environmental education nonprofit
organization in Long Beach, CA.
For
the previous 17 years, I practiced and taught internal medicine
at the LA County + USC Medical Center, directing the Cancer and
AIDS Pain Service for 9 of those years. While practicing,
my research concerned the optimal use of morphine and
other opioid pain medications for patients with cancer and AIDS.
My
first book, Euthanasia
Is Not The Answer—A Hospice Physician’s View,
grew out of my experiences caring for more than 2,000 terminally
ill cancer and AIDS patients.
